What is hazardous waste?

Some materials are flammable, explosive, or toxic and must be disposed of properly. These items can only be disposed of during a Household Hazardous Waste Collection day. Materials that require special disposal include gasoline, herbicides, pesticides, pool chemicals, and more.

When is the next hazardous waste day?

The R-Board’s Annual Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Day is scheduled for September 12, 2026, at the Stafford Regional Airport, located at 95 Aviation Way, Fredericksburg, VA. Please note that this event is exclusively for residents of the City of Fredericksburg and Stafford County. Businesses are not allowed to bring their hazardous waste.

  • The following limits apply per household:
    • 5 gallons of liquid HHW
    • Container size may not exceed five gallons
  • 40 pounds of solid HHW
    • Container size may not exceed five gallons

You can also recycle your electronics, including cell phones, laptops, iPads, printer cartridges, computer cables, and printers. Electronics: Electronics can be dropped off daily at the Regional Landfill and the Belman Road Convenience Center.

Propane tanks: If you need to dispose of a propane tank for your gas grill, consider using a propane tank exchange or a filling station near you. For larger tanks, check for the name on the tank and contact the company listed there. Since they own the tank, they will provide guidance for proper disposal.
